More About Species Of Cockroaches

Remember that there are numerous cockroach species in our area. Therefore, it is vital to learn more about each. After all, you can’t do anything about the problem until you’ve identified the species. Read the information below to find out more about the species in our area.

German Cockroaches

While there are numerous cockroach species in our area, one of the most common is the German cockroach. It is only 5/8 of an inch. The German cockroach is tan or light brown. Remember that most German cockroaches are going to breed and reproduce prolifically. The German cockroach fits into this category. It will start with a few cockroaches before quickly transforming into a large infestation.

American Cockroaches

Although they’re called American cockroaches, they can be found elsewhere too. It grows up to two inches, so you won’t be able to ignore this pest. You’ll also have to worry about the fact that this cockroach is going to fly. American cockroaches take a while to enter a residential structure. They live for many years so they’re going to leave in a hurry. They tend to approach homes with broken sewer pipes because they want to enter the nearby sewer system. Check your property to find out what is going on.

Besides German cockroaches and American cockroaches, you’re also going to find Surinam cockroaches, Brown-banded cockroaches, and more.

Pennsylvania Wood Cockroaches

The Pennsylvania wood cockroach is common in the eastern portion of the United States. However, the pest can travel by hiding in shipping containers. We sometimes find these pests in our area. Males often reach an inch in length while females are just three-quarters of an inch. Thankfully, these cockroaches are rarely found in our area although they can enter residences from time to time. Once you’ve found these cockroaches on your property, you need to start looking for woodpiles, wood siding, and overflowing gutters. If you have some of these, you’re likely going to have Pennsylvania wood cockroaches too.

Spotted Mediterranean Cockroaches

Next, you may encounter Spotted Mediterranean Cockroaches. While the cockroach is smaller than others, you cannot ignore it. If you do, there is a good chance that the infestation is going to severely worsen before you know it. The cockroach sometimes reaches a third of an inch, so it is one of the smallest cockroaches in our city. It is native to Europe although it has been in North America for hundreds of years. While you might encounter this cockroach, it likely won’t reproduce in your home. It can fly toward lights at night.

Oriental Cockroaches

The oriental cockroach regularly grows over an inch. It is either black or dark brown and females will never have winds. As for male oriental cockroaches, their wings will cover three-quarters of their bodies. They are a lot like American cockroaches because they share traits. For instance, both cockroaches are interested in sneaking into sewer systems and steam tunnels. While these cockroaches have a lot in common, there is one significant difference. The oriental cockroach can tolerate cold weather exceptionally well. American cockroaches cannot.

Smokey Brown Cockroaches

These cockroaches grow over an inch. They’re different in terms of appearance because they have a deep, red hue. Thankfully, these cockroaches are infrequently found in our city. You might from them from time to time, but it is unlikely. If they’re found in our area, there is a good chance that they arrived in a shipping container.

Surinam Cockroaches

The Surinam cockroach is only three-quarters of an inch, but it’ll make a big impact on you. One thing that sets them apart is the fact that Surinam cockroaches are female. The group of cockroaches does not have any male cockroaches. Despite being females only, the species can still reproduce prolifically. The female cockroaches hold eggs until they hatch. Once this happens, they’re going to give live birth to the new cockroaches. The Surinam cockroach tends to hang out in greenhouses and similar buildings.

Brown-Banded Cockroaches

At only half an inch, the brown-banded cockroach is one of the smallest cockroaches in our area. Nevertheless, a brown-banded cockroach infestation will prove to be a major problem. Many people believe brown-banded cockroaches are German cockroaches. They look alike, but there is one difference. The brown-banded cockroach doesn’t have a pair of racing stripes on its head. It is unlikely that these cockroaches are going to infest your home.
